Los Cenzontles

Cenzontle is the Nahuatl word for mockingbird, the bird that sings the songs of other birds. Like the cenzontle, Los Cenzontles interpret songs and dances of various Mexican regions in a style that is uniquely their own. Their youthful voices resonate with clarity and unbridled strength in every song they deliver, whether it be an acappella corrido, a mariachi bolero, a banda cumbia or a haunting ancient son.

Los Cenzontles, the highest rated latino youth program in America, was founded and is directed by Grammy nominated producer Eugene Rodriguez. Since its inception in 1989 the group, which has trained hundreds of young people, has performed nationwide and has recorded four full length CDs.

Ranging in ages 10 and 20, the musicians and singers of Los Cenzontles are trained by master artists at Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center, San Pablo, CA. These notable artists include NEA Folk Artist Gilberto Gutierrez (son jarocho), renowned artist/teacher Timothy Driesel (voice) and Francisco "Pato" Diaz (mariachi) among others. The group also has participated in study trips to Mexico to fully explore their musical heritage within its native context. Aside from being positive role models in their community, Los Cenzontles are truly blessed with musical talent and vocal prowess.
